My talk consists of two parts. The first\npart is a brief introduction and examples of interesting projects I have worked\non during my career. The purpose of this introduction is to give you an idea of\nthe kind of problems I like to take on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the second part, I will talk about the system trends that will be impacting Hyperscalers over the next 5+ years. I\u2019ll be using Azure as an example, but these trends apply equally well to other hyperscalers. I will talk about a range of topics from business objectives to (industry) hardware trends and the associated software trends. My focus will be primarily on the opportunities and the challenges these trends create. I will discuss \u201csolutions\u201d where they exist but, in many cases, these are open problems where the outcome is still unclear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Leendert van\nDoorn<\/a> is a Distinguished Engineer\/VP in Microsoft’s\nAzure Core team where he is best known for his work on enabling ARM64 servers\nas first-class citizens in Microsoft’s Azure datacenters. He has also been\nworking on disaggregation and he represents Microsoft on the board of Directors\nfor the Compute Express Link (CXL) and the Gen-Z organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before joining Microsoft, he was a\nCorporate Fellow\/CVP at AMD where he was responsible for AMD’s security efforts,\nsoftware innovations and he was the technical executive during the creation of\nAMD’s China JV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leendert joined AMD from IBM’s T.J. Watson\nResearch Center, where he was a Researcher and Sr. Manager leading the secure\nsystems team, the ethical hacker\u2019s team and a security usability and privacy\nteam. At IBM he worked on physically secure coprocessors, secure Hypervisors,\nTPM’s, wireless security scanners and he added full virtualization support to\nXen in collaboration with Intel and AMD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When conference calls and meetings are\ngetting too much, he has been known to find refuge at CMU ECE where he is an\nadjunct professor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leendert holds a Ph.D. from the Vrije\nUniversiteit in Amsterdam, The Netherlands and an engineering degree from the\nHTS in The Hague, The Netherlands. During his formative Ph.D. years, he had the\ngood fortune to intern two summers at Digital\u2019s System Research Center and one\nsummer at AT&T Bell Labs. Both places made a lasting impact on how he\nthinks and works today. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
